Intro to Lead Climbing

Before signing up for the class, please make sure the following prerequisites apply to you:

• You have a top rope belay certification at Triangle Rock Club
• You are at least 12 years old or older
• While there is no strict requirement on climbing ability, we recommend that you are comfortable climbing 5.9 on top rope before learning to lead climb

Session 1: over the course of this 2.5-hour class, you will learn about the necessary equipment for leading, how to tie a figure-8 follow-through knot, clipping, rope management, and falling.

Session 2: over the course of this 2.5-hour class, you will learn how to properly lead belay and catch a fall. Climbers will have the opportunity to practice taking and catching lead falls under the guidance of the instructor.

Optional Session 3: TRC offers a free-for-members ‘Lead Practice Session’ that can be taken once you have completed ‘Intro to Lead’ and before you take your lead certification assessment. Click HERE for more information.

We highly recommend taking the ‘Lead Practice Session’ after completing this class.

A lead certification assessment must be taken and passed after completion of this course in order to lead climb at Triangle Rock Club. You will be eligible to complete the assessment 24 hours after completing the course. The lead assessment is available during normal operating hours, and there is no additional charge for taking it. Please see a staff member when you are ready to complete the assessment.
